How to Remove Hard Water Stains From Glass Shower Doors: A Dublin Guide
If your shower screen turns cloudy a few days after you clean it, the water is the culprit, not your cleaning. Much of Dublin is supplied with hard water, and as it dries on glass it leaves behind calcium and magnesium deposits. Whether you are in a new-build apartment in the Docklands or a period house in Rathmines, the white film is the same.
This guide covers how to shift existing limescale from shower glass using simple products, how to stop it building up again, and when it is worth handing the job to a professional.
Why shower glass goes cloudy in Dublin
Hard water carries dissolved minerals. When droplets evaporate on the glass, the water goes but the minerals stay. Each shower adds a thin layer, and soap scum bonds to it, so within a few weeks a clear screen can look frosted.
The good news is that most of this build-up is alkaline, which means a mild acid such as white vinegar or citric acid will dissolve it without scratching the glass.
- Minerals left behind as water dries on the glass
- Soap and shower gel residue sticking to the mineral layer
- Worse on screens that are rarely wiped down after use
- Most noticeable near the bottom of the screen and around seals
What you will need
You do not need specialist products for most screens. Everything below is available in Dunnes, Tesco or SuperValu.
- White vinegar (or a citric acid descaler)
- A spray bottle
- Washing-up liquid
- A non-scratch sponge and two microfibre cloths
- A squeegee for ongoing upkeep
How to clean hard water stains off shower glass
Work on a cool screen, not straight after a hot shower, so the solution does not evaporate before it has time to work.
Step by step
For light to moderate build-up, this method is usually enough on the first attempt.
- Mix equal parts warm white vinegar and water in a spray bottle, with a small squeeze of washing-up liquid to help it cling
- Spray the whole screen generously, inside and out, paying attention to the lower third
- Leave for 15 to 30 minutes, re-spraying any areas that start to dry
- Scrub gently with a non-scratch sponge in small circles
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water
- Dry completely with a clean microfibre cloth to avoid new water marks
For heavy, long-standing limescale
If the film has built up over months, soak kitchen paper in neat vinegar and press it onto the glass for an hour before scrubbing. A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, applied after the vinegar, adds gentle abrasion for stubborn spots. Repeat rather than scrubbing harder, which risks scratching.
Do not forget the frame, seals and tracks
Limescale collects in the metal frame, along the rubber seals and in sliding door tracks, and these areas trap moisture that can lead to mould. An old toothbrush dipped in the vinegar solution reaches into corners. Rinse well afterwards, as prolonged contact with acid can dull some metal finishes.
Keeping shower glass clear
Prevention takes far less effort than removal. The single most effective habit is drying the glass after each shower, which stops minerals being left behind in the first place.
- Squeegee the screen after every shower, which takes under a minute
- Leave the door open and use the extractor fan to dry the room
- Give the glass a quick vinegar spray and wipe once a week
- Consider a water-repellent glass treatment on a newly cleaned screen
- Switch to a liquid shower gel if bar soap leaves more residue
When to call in a professional
If the screen is still cloudy after two or three attempts, the glass may be etched, which is permanent damage rather than a surface deposit. It is also worth handing over the job when the whole bathroom has got on top of you: limescale on the taps, grout and shower head tends to build up at the same rate.
A deep clean from an eMop cleaner covers the shower screen, taps, tiles and fittings in one visit, and a regular clean afterwards stops the build-up coming back.
